Bodybuilding Equipment Guide

The reasons for bodybuilding vary from one person to the next. Outside of wanting to look better in your clothes and have more self-confidence, the health benefits of lifting weights are astounding. Having a lower heart rate, controlling cardiovascular disease and having better health overall are all benefits of bodybuilding. Whatever your motivation, the bodybuilding equipment on the market today is sure to meet all of your fitness goals and aspirations.

You may enjoy lifting in a public place like a gym. Being around others who are also on a bodybuilding quest could be a great motivation for you. A gym setting could also offer you more bodybuilding equipment than you have room for at home or that is out of your price range. On the other hand, if you do have the space for a home gym and feel more comfortable working out in the comfort of your own personal space, a gym may not be for you. Regardless of your preferred setting, successful bodybuilding can happen anywhere with the proper equipment.

You would be hard pressed to find a gym that did not have any traditional free weights. This type of bodybuilding equipment includes barbells, dumbbells and weight plates. Barbells are made of iron and are either straight or shaped with a groove for hand placement. The shaped barbells are known as EZ Curl Bars. Both allow for weight plates in varying weight amounts to be placed on either ends and secured with spring collars. Some prefer bodybuilding using only free weights because other muscle groups besides the targeted area are engaged. While this may lend a better workout, proper lifting techniques are imperative for safety and to avoid injury.
Machines are the alternative to free weights. Most gyms offer single and multi-station bodybuilding equipment. Through the use of pulleys and cables, a weight stack held in place by a pin is lifted. Single station machines concentrate on specific muscle groups and areas on the body, like arms and back. Multi-station machines offer the capability of performing multiple exercises in essentially one space. If you are just starting out in bodybuilding or if it has been awhile since last working out, you may prefer to use machines as they are said to be not only easier, but safer as well.
There are a few bodybuilding accessories to consider purchasing if you find yourself working out in this fashion often. Lifting gloves, knee and wrist wraps all offer you support and protection while bodybuilding. Lifting belts are also something to consider when taking on large amounts of weight. To add weight to your body when performing exercises like chin-ups, you may find dip belts to be helpful as well.
